Surfside Beach names new fire chief after 6-month vacancy

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Surfside Beach has named a former Horry County Fire Rescue lieutenant as the town’s next fire chief, filling a position that’s been open since August.

David Nelson’s first day will be March 11, the town announced in a news release.

Town Administrator Gerry Vincent said in a statement Nelson was selected from a pool of 36 applicants.

David comes to us at an appropriate time as we begin the budget process for fiscal year 2024-25, reviewing our ISO standards and process, and two months before the tourist season,” Krouse said. “And lastly, David’s familiarity with Horry County, having worked here previously, will benefit the town of Surfside Beach.” he said.

Nelson’s fire service career began in 1987 in Crescent, Iowa, where he worked his way up from a volunteer to rescue captain. He then moved on to Nebraska.

After 11 years with Horry County Fire Rescue, Nelson most recently served as chief for Whitehall Township, Penn., a post he’s held since 2016.

Nelson will replace Rob Clemons, who served the town for six years before announcing his retirement over the summer.
