Surging Whips improve to 7-1

May 10—UNCASVILLE — Haley Cruz went 5- for- 9 with six RBI as the Windham High softball team made it seven straight victories in sweeping an Eastern Connecticut Conference North Division doubleheader Saturday over St. Bernard.

Isabelle Perez won both games in the circle for the Whips ( 7- 1 overall, 7- 1 league), winning the opener, 19- 4, and taking Game 2, 12-0.

Angie Martinez added four hits on the day for Windham and scored five runs.

In Storrs, Ashley Lewis struck out 11 with two hits, including a triple, as E. O. Smith scored seven runs in the bottom of the second in an 8- 2 Central Connecticut Conference Patriot East Division win over Tolland.

Maddi Sauve and Gabby King each had three hits for the Panthers ( 5- 6 overall, 1- 2 league).

In Lebanon, Kayla Goins ( 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Hannah Christiansen (3 hits, 2 RBI) and Rayne Bobbi (2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI) highlighted an 18- hit attack to help lift Lyman Memorial in a 13-6 ECC North Division win over Putnam.

Kelsey Dunnack ( 2 hits, 2 runs, RBI), Loretta Svedarsky (3 hits, 2 runs), Kassidy LaTour (2 hits, run 3 RBI) and Madi Crawford (2 RBI, run) all had big days at the plate for the Bulldogs ( 7- 2 overall, 7- 2 league), who scored eight runs on nine hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 4- 0 deficit.

In Willimantic, Windham Tech ( 7- 4) had its 7- game winning streak snapped in a 20-2 non-league loss in five innings to Hale-Ray (5-6).

BASEBALL

Daylan Griffin and Joshua Person each threw complete games, combining to allow seven hits with 15 strikeouts and one walk as Lyman Memorial swept Putnam in an ECC North Division doubleheader at Murphy Park.

The Bulldogs ( 6- 6 overall, 6-6 league) won the opener, 11-3, and took the second game, 13- 3, in six innings.

Griffin had six hits on the day with four RBI while Jeremiah Bobbi (5 runs, 2 stolen bases) finished with six hits in the twinbill as Lyman Memorial extended its winning streak to four straight games.

In Willimantic, Walker Baillargeon ( 8 hits, 6 runs, 4 RBI) and Joe Basso (6 hits, 4 runs, 8 RBI) led the offense and St. Bernard (7-5 overall, 7- 5 league) combined to strike out 29 batters in a 17-1, 19-3 ECC North Division doubleheader sweep over Windham.

Chase Collins and Tyler Walter each had two hits and scored a run while Jack Valliere had two hits and walked three times for the Whips (1-8, 1-8).

SOFTBALL

Coventry allowed three unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning in a 6-3 NCCC loss to Somers.

Brenna Darcy finished with three hits while Delaney Harrington and Amy Prior (RBI) each had two hits for the Patriots ( 9- 4 overall, 9- 4 league).

Kiana Kalaman had a key 2- run double with two out in the ninth inning for the Spartans (11-2, 11-1).

In Hebron, Jordyn Fitch and Faith Chanski combined on a 5-inning no-hitter and RHAM rolled to a 20-0 CCC inter-division victory over Bloomfield.

Linnea Carlson scored three runs, Rebecca Eaton ( 2 runs) hit a 2- run triple and MeKayla Pace had a 2- run double when the Raptors ( 7- 2) scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning.

In Chaplin, Julia Herman and Kristie Zator each hit home runs, combining to go 6-for-6 with six runs scored in leading Parish Hill to a 19-1 victory over Weaver in the first game of a CRAL doubleheader.

Gretchen Ricci added two hits, scored two runs and had three RBI in Game 1 for the Pirates ( 7- 2 overall, 6- 0 league). Zator picked up her second victory of the afternoon in the circle in Game 2, striking out all nine batters she faced in a 12- 0 victory.

Daniella MacNaughton had two hits, two runs and an RBI in the nightcap.

GIRLS TENNIS

M.J. Williams and Ashlyn White (6-1, 6-2), Lizzy Moulton and Evie Griswold (7-6, 6-1) an Nicole Olsen and Andreana DeCarlo (6-1, 6-3) swept the doubles as Coventry downed Canton, 5-2, in a NCCC match.

Jess Hanrath won at No. 2 singles (7-6, 6-3) for the Patriots ( 6- 4 overall, 6- 4 league).

In Hebron, Addison Brown and Alexandra Pileski lost in three sets at No. 1 doubles for RHAM (1-8) in a 7-0 CCC inter-division loss to Farmington (8-0).
