Surprise honor for Clovis’ longest employed teacher. ‘My goodness things have changed’

Sharon Lamb started working at Clovis Unified the same year the ATM got its patent.

It was the same year Secretariat won the Triple Crown for horse racing and Good Company Players ran its first community theater production in Fresno.

To do the math, she’s been with the school district for 50 years — longer than any other employee.

“I was hired back in the day when teachers were required to wear stockings, high heels, dresses or a suit,” Lamb said during an employee appreciation event in May.

“My goodness things have changed.”

Lamb was hired by the district’s original superintendent, Floyd “Doc” Buchanan, to teach third grade at Jefferson Elementary, which she did for a decade, before switching to kindergarten.

She taught at Red Bank Elementary when it opened in 1991 and was there Friday morning when the school surprised her by dedicating the 2023 yearbook in her honor.

During the ceremony, Red Bank principal Amanda Torres praised Lamb for the inspiration she has provided students.

“When you think of kindergarten, you think of miss Sharon Lamb. She is the reason so many children have fallen in love with school.”

The celebration honored Lamb, but also the roots and foundation of the school, Torres said.

“She embodies that and we cherish that.”

Lamb, who has no plan to retire anytime soon, shrugged off the benchmark as being anything extraordinarily special. You don’t do things for the recognition, she said.

“I just thought I would just go on and on and on and keep teaching.”
