Surprise Jan. 6 committee hearing set for Capitol Hill
The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol will hold an unexpected hearing Tuesday (1 p.m. ET, USATODAY.com, C-SPAN and other cable news networks) with just 24 hours notice and while lawmakers are away from Washington on a two-week recess. In a Monday announcement, the committee said it would present "recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony," but offered few details about the nature of the evidence or who will testify. Punchbowl News was first to report late Monday that Cassidy Hutchinson, a onetime senior aide to Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows who testified previously on video, will testify publicly Tuesday. Hearings for the month of June were originally supposed to conclude last week, when the panel focused on former President Donald Trump's attempts to pressure the Department of Justice to investigate unsubstantiated claims of election fraud.

Investigation underway after dozens found dead in tractor-trailer in Texas
Forty-six people were found dead and 16 others were taken to hospitals Monday after a tractor-trailer containing suspected migrants was found abandoned in a remote area of San Antonio amid soaring temperatures in Texas, officials said. According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, a city worker heard a cry for help from the truck Monday evening and discovered the gruesome scene. The people found inside the truck are being treated at a hospital, Fire Department Chief Charles Hood said, including 12 adults and four children, who he referred to as teenagers and young adults. "They were suffering from heat stroke, heat exhaustion," Hood said, later adding that there were no signs of water or a working air conditioning unit on the semi-truck. McManus said the investigation has been turned over to federal authorities. But, according to local reports, McManus also said the number of victims could rise and dogs have been searching the woods. They will likely be out again Tuesday morning.

Investigators probe Amtrak train crash that killed 3 in Missouri
National Transportation Safety Board investigators will arrive in Missouri Tuesday after an Amtrak train carrying 243 passengers struck a dump truck and derailed, leaving 3 people dead and dozens more injured. Several cars of Amtrak’s Southwest Chief train, traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago, came off the tracks after colliding with the truck at 12:42 p.m. on Monday in Mendon, about three hours northwest of St. Louis, Amtrak said. Seven of the train's eight cars derailed, said Cpl. Justin Dunn, public information officer at Missouri State Highway Patrol. Dunn confirmed two people died on the train and one died in the truck. The crash occurred at an "uncontrolled intersection" on a gravel road without lights or electronic controls, Lt. Eric Brown of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. The crash came a day after three people were killed when an Amtrak commuter train smashed into a car in Brentwood, Northern California, on Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Two adults and a child were taken to hospitals.
Ghislaine Maxwell to be sentenced for helping Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse girls
Ghislaine Maxwell, the socialite who once consorted with royals, presidents and billionaires, will be sentenced Tuesday morning for helping the wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse underage girls. The sentencing in New York City is the culmination of a prosecution that detailed how the power couple flaunted their riches and prominent connections to lure vulnerable girls as young as 14, and then exploit them. Prosecutors said Epstein, who killed himself in 2019 while awaiting trial, sexually abused children hundreds of times over more than a decade, and couldn't have done so without the help of Maxwell, his longtime companion and onetime girlfriend. In December, a jury convicted Maxwell of sex trafficking, transporting a minor to participate in illegal sex acts and two conspiracy charges. Prosecutors say she deserves 30 to 55 years in prison. Maxwell, 60, has denied abusing anyone. Her lawyers have asked for a sentence of no more than five years.
Fact check: Ghislaine Maxwell was not sentenced in May. She'll be sentenced Tuesday

Key primary elections in Colorado, Illinois, other states
Several states hold primary elections Tuesday in the first contests since last week's landmark Supreme Court ruling eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion. Democrats and Republicans are both voting in the states of New York, Colorado, Illinois, Oklahoma and Utah. Some key races to watch: the Republican primary for secretary of state in Colorado, which features a county clerk under indictment over unsuccessful efforts to find voter fraud in Donald Trump's loss of the 2020 presidential election; the New York state governor's race, which is being conducted in two acts in a system that has been called "a mess"; and House races in Illinois, where redistricting has forced some incumbents to run against other incumbents.
