‘What a surprise’: Tom Hanks sends an Arlington typewriter repair shop his original machine

A typewriter repair shop in Arlington, Massachusetts received a special surprise in the mail on Tuesday all the way from Santa Monica, California.

The Cambridge Typewriter Company posted photos to their Facebook page of a typewriter they got in the mail from Tom Hanks himself.

The Oscar-winning actor even autographed it and left a typed note explaining the gift.

“On one hand, you are taking [it] off my shelves and out in the greater world,” Hanks wrote. “On the other hand, you are giving me more space and less clutter. On the third (?) hand, you just may be giving this miracle of a machine a fuller, newer life of use.”

The Arlington shop says it’ll have fun restoring the typewriter.

“I’m very happy Tom included us in his plan to whittle down his typewriter inventory. I’ll have fun restoring this beauty back to its former glory and figure out what I’m going to do with it. What a wonderful surprise,” according to their Facebook post.

A typewriter enthusiast, Hanks has a history of giving away machines from his personal collection. At one point, he owned hundreds, he told the New York Times. Now, in an effort to scale back his collection, he sends them to friends, co-stars, even strangers.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
