The decision by ice-cream company Ben & Jerry's to terminate sales of its product in the West Bank and east Jerusalem has left a sour taste in the mouths of several high-ranking Israeli officials, including the nation's prime minister.

Israel's Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Yair Lapid, who is serving as the alternate prime minister as well as minister of foreign affairs, all criticized the ice-cream maker's decision, with Bennett saying Ben & Jerry's branded itself as "an anti-Israel ice cream."

"Ben & Jerry’s decision represents shameful surrender to antisemitism, to BDS and to all that is wrong with the anti-Israel and anti-Jewish discourse," Lapid tweeted. "We will not be silent."

On Monday, Ben & Jerry’s wrote in its announcement that it is "inconsistent with our values" for the company's products to be sold in "the Occupied Palestinian Territory." The company said it "will stay in Israel through a different arrangement," underscoring that the discontinuation of sales will only apply to the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

The United Kingdom-based company Unilever, which acquired Ben & Jerry's in 2000, called the Israeli-Palestinian conflict "a very complex and sensitive situation" in a statement on Monday.

"We remain fully committed to our presence in Israel, where we have invested in our people, brands and business for several decades," Unilever added.

The announcement comes nearly two months after Israel and Hamas entered a delicate ceasefire on May 20, following nearly 11 days of violence between the two sides earlier that month.

The boycotts, divestment, and sanctions movement lauded the ice-cream company's decision as "a decisive step towards ending the company’s complicity in Israel’s occupation and violations of Palestinian rights," according to a press readout.

The Israeli and United States governments have criticized the grassroots BDS movement, alleging that it attempts to delegitimize the country and its policies.

The Washington Examiner contacted Ben & Jerry's and Unilever but did not immediately receive responses.
