Survey finds more people in Russia support peace talks than hostilities

Since mobilisation was announced, there has been a slight increase in the number of Russians who support the start of the negotiation process.

Quote: "44% of respondents believe that military operations should be continued: 29% are ‘definitely’ sure of this, and 15% are ‘somewhat’ sure.

In contrast, 48% of respondents believe that peace negotiations should be started. In August, 48% of those polled were in favour of continuing military operations and 44% were in favour of starting peace talks."

 

"The group that least supports the continuation of hostilities is 18-24-year-olds - just over a quarter (26%). The greatest support (52%) is found among those aged 55 and older."

 

Reference: The nationwide survey by the Levada-Center was conducted on 22-28 September 2022, based on a representative all-Russian sample of the urban and rural population of 1,631 people aged 18 and older in 137 villages, towns and cities across 50 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The research is conducted at respondents’ homes through personal interviews.

The margin of error for a sample size of 1,600 people (with a probability of 0.95) does not exceed:

3.4% for indicators close to 50%

Background:

  • In early August, another opinion poll in Russia showed that 52% of Russians were in favour of continuing the military operation, while 38% supported peace talks.
