Survey says Rockford safest city in Illinois to ride a bicycle

Good news for those of you who use a bicycle to get around town: Rockford is the safest city in Illinois for bicyclists.

That's according to a new survey done by Bisnar Chase.

The survey asked 3,000 cyclists to rate how safe or unsafe they feel during their daily commutes. Cyclists rated their experiences on a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 indicated feeling the safest.

The survey revealed Rockford as the 60th safest city in the country for cyclists, and the safest city in the state.

Rockford's score was a 7.3 out of 10, just edging out Aurora, Illinois, which received a 7 out of 10.

"The city has a growing cycling community that is committed to making Rockford a safe and welcoming place for cyclists. This community advocates for better cycling infrastructure and education," the survey said.

There are many paths and trials to bike in Rockford and the surrounding areas, including The Trails at Alpine Hills Adventure Park and Rock Cut State Park.

Three other Illinois cities cracked the top 250 list: Chicago, Naperville and Joliet.

Chicago ranked 161 with a score of 6.2 while both Naperville and Joliet were outside of the top 200 with scores below 6.

Here's a look at the safest cities according to to the survey:

  1. Virginia Beach: 9.4/10

  2. Raleigh, North Carolina: 8.9/10

  3. Kent, Washington: 8.8/10

  4. Syracuse, New York: 8.8/10

  5. Washington D.C.: 8.8/10

Columbus, Georgia, had the lowest score at 4.2 out of 10.
