The 44th season of "Survivor" features two hometown heroes: Matthew Grinstead-Mayle, of Columbus, and Josh Wilder, from Cincinnati. Unfortunately, one of them made some major mistakes on episode four, which aired on CBS and Paramount+ Wednesday. Dispatch features editor Erica Thompson and Cincinnati Enquirer News of Now reporter Emily DeLetter recap the episode below.

'Survivor' 44 episode one:Injuries, new advantages and a chaotic Tribal Council

'Survivor' episode two:Columbus and Cincinnati players go head-to-head in challenge

'Survivor' episode three:One Ohio player wins immunity, another becomes a target

Emily: The episode opens with the Soka tribe and a confessional from Cincinnati native Josh Wilder. He says he feels comfortable with his relationships for all the members of his tribe, but the other four members are looking to blindside him and vote him out. This could be very bad or very good for our Cincinnati guy.

Erica: It’s not looking good...I hope he turns it around. I just feel so bad that he is in the dark.  Meanwhile, on the Tika tribe, Carolyn has decided to put her fake idol to use, placing an “x” made from sticks in the birdcage and an identical “x” out in the jungle where the fake idol was buried. Sarah finds the fake idol, and no one suspects anything is amiss. You know...I’m starting to think the producers are encouraging all of this trickery this season. But maybe I’m just being cynical.

Emily: For the reward challenge to win a tarp (a lifeline out in the rainy jungle), players are shooting giant slingshots at giant targets. Josh hit his target easily, as do the other members of the Soka tribe, leading them to win the reward! It’s not the immunity challenge yet, but his contribution must mean something...right??

Erica: Hopefully. And, thanks in part to Columbus resident Matthew’s Grinstead-Mayle's aim, injured shoulder and all, Ratu takes second place!

Unfortunately, the “journeys” are back (a single person from each tribe travels to a secret location to try to win an advantage). Sorry, I still don’t like this aspect of the game. But I’m hoping Josh wins something so he can remain safe. The only issue is that he has to realize he needs to use to it!

Cincinnati player Josh Wilder receives an advantage

Emily: On the journey, Carson, Jaime and Josh each pick a path. Josh picks the right path and WINS AN IMMUNITY IDOL! (Actually, so do all three players.) But it comes with a twist. The players will not be returning to their original tribes, drawing a new tribe to join. Josh draws Tika and joins his new tribe; Carson draws Ratu and Jaime draws Soka.

Josh is also lying to his new tribemates about his job, telling them he is a physical trainer instead of a surgical podiatrist. Sarah is on to his lies though, doing the math from his storytelling and calling out his inconsistencies to the others. Lying about your job is a dumb move, in my opinion. So if Josh’s new tribe loses the immunity challenge, he could be in trouble yet again.

Erica: JOSH! What are you doing? Well, it’s likely that the other two players will also be facing some level of risk on their new tribes. However, at Ratu, Carson is immediately embraced by Matthew, who decides to share information about Jaime’s fake idol to build trust. This could either help Matthew or harm him if Carson decides to spill the beans to the others. And notice that Carson didn’t tell Matthew about his immunity idol. At Soka, the members are suspicious of Jaime, and Danny even searches her bag for an immunity idol. He doesn’t find anything, so her secret is safe for now. I’m actually impressed that none of the players who went on journeys revealed their immunity idols...yet.

Emily: The immunity challenge today has big stakes, especially for our players on their new tribes. Josh is doing well with his new Tika tribe, swimming, diving and jumping through the course with ease. He’s certainly a physical contender, if (and hopefully when) he makes it to the merge and individual immunity takes over.

And Matthew made the good decision to sit this one out, given his dislocated shoulder. I can’t imagine the pain he would be in had he participated.

Bad day for Josh. After a close finish, Josh and the Tika tribe lose the immunity challenge and have to go to Tribal Council.

Erica: Praying to the “Survivor” gods that he uses that immunity idol.

Spoiler alert: Who got voted off on 'Survivor' season 44, episode four?

Emily: The tribe seems pretty set on voting Josh out and are telling him Carolyn as the decoy vote. But Carolyn isn’t so sure on the majority plan. Josh just told Carolyn he would use his immunity idol on her to vote Sarah out, falsely believing she’s the real target when it is, in fact, him. How do I scream at the TV and tell him this is a terrible idea?

Erica: I’m so frustrated. If Josh doesn’t play the immunity idol for himself, I can’t have sympathy for him if he goes home. I’m sure he’s hoping to take advantage of these cracks in Carolyn and Yam Yam’s relationship—which appear to be growing deeper at Tribal Council—but I will be surprised if they truly turn on each other.

Emily: Josh finally has some sense and plays his hidden immunity idol for himself. Thank goodness. And since Sarah and Yam Yam cast votes for Josh, which were nullified by his idol, Sarah goes home with two votes. Yam Yam looks shocked and is now at the bottom of his tribe, and Josh and Carolyn both survive another day.

Erica: Wow. I really thought Sarah would have played her immunity idol when she saw that Josh played his. But I’m happy the Ohio guys are hanging in there somehow. Let’s see what happens next week!

Emily: See you then!
