Susong named Maple Crest Middle School principal

Dec. 13—Starting in January, Maple Crest Middle School will have a new principal.

Mike Susong was named the next principal of the STEM middle school Monday by the Kokomo School Board. He takes over for current principal Tom Hughes.

Susong had been assistant high school principal, overseeing Kokomo High School's alternative programs, including the Twilight program and Kokomo Virtual Academy, a virtual high school launched this year.

Admittedly, being a principal wasn't on Susong's radar when he entered education.

"I've been able to see what impact you can make at different levels," he said. "I feel like I'm ready to make that next step."

The soon-to-be principal — Susong will start in January — said he's looking forward to engaging the community with the Maple Crest Middle School, especially given the school's STEM focus and some of the new industries coming to town.

"Being able to plug in community-wise ... will be a big aspect for the school," he said.

Susong said he'll join a strong staff in his new position. He's looking forward to that, too.

"I've heard them (students at KHS) talk about their teachers in middle school," Susong said.

Teni Helmberger, director of secondary education and special programs, said Susong fits the profile of Maple Crest Middle School.

"Mr. Susong's extensive experience in education, dedication to student success and passion for pursuing an innovative approach make him the ideal candidate for this role," she said in a statement. "We believe that his transition from Kokomo High School to Maple Crest will be seamless, as he brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of leadership in education."

Susong is a former Teacher of the Year recipient and has been with Kokomo School Corporation for 14 years. He started as a counselor.

"I have loved every second of it and loved being a part of it and will continue to do so," he told the board.

Susong is also the softball coach for the Kokomo Wildkats.
