Suspect in I-83 manhunt shot driver in attempted carjacking while trying to escape: police

State police have arrested a Maryland man who led officers on an hours-long manhunt after an armed robbery in Springettsbury Township and shot a woman while attempting to take her vehicle, according to state police.

Jajyevoune Jerome Lee, 22, of Baltimore has been charged with attempted homicide, attempted robbery of a motor vehicle, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm prohibited, flight to avoid apprehension and other offenses.

He was denied bail and sent to York County Prison, according to court records.

It started early Monday morning with Springettsbury Township Police responding to a call about an armed robbery at an apartment complex. The white Hyundai Tucson fled the scene, and state police later stopped it along I-83 between the Glen Rock and Loganville interchanges, according to news releases and an affidavit of probable cause.

The man ran into a wooded area while wearing a fanny pack, state police said. Officers detained a 29-year-old woman at the scene.

Law enforcement found a wallet, which contained a Social Security card and a COVID card, that identified the man as Lee, who is wanted on multiple felony warrants in Maryland, state police said.

Law enforcement − including the Pennsylvania State Game Warden, the York County Sheriff's Office K-9s, and Southern Regional Police − scoured the area for hours, looking for the suspect. A state police helicopter and state police K-9s also aided in the search.

The manhunt snarled traffic along the highway for most of the day.

In the afternoon, state police received calls about a man matching Lee's description walking along Commerce Drive in Springfield Township, state police said. Troopers responded and searched the area, spotting Lee in the area of Harvey Court in Shrewsbury Township.

Lee took off and ran across both the northbound and southbound lanes of the highway, the affidavit states.

State police allege that Lee jumped in front of a vehicle that was traveling southbound on I-83. He approached the driver's side door, pointed a gun at the driver and fired twice into the vehicle. One of the rounds struck the victim, a 53-year-old woman from Shrewsbury, in the chest, the news release and affidavit state.

As troopers converged on Lee, he pointed the gun at two officers. Troopers ordered him to drop the weapon, and Lee threw it into the air, and police took him into custody, the affidavit states.

Troopers rendered aid to the driver of the vehicle, who was alert and conscious. She was taken to York Hospital for treatment.

Authorities completely closed I-83 between the Glen Rock and Shrewsbury exits during rush hour as the investigation continued. Traffic control also was used on other roads in the area.

State police found that Lee was in possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and other illegal substances along with the firearm.

Lee has a preliminary hearing set for June 20, according to court records.

State police thanked the public and local first responders for their assistance at the scene.

The emergency responders included PennDOT and the following fire departments: Goodwill (18 & 19), Strinestown, Laurel, North Hopewell Winterstown, Eureka, Citizens Volunteer, Rose, Glen Rock, Shrewsbury and Loganville.
