Suspect in American Fork impounded car theft shot by police at South Salt Lake apartment complex

AMERICAN FORK, Utah (ABC4) — A suspect wanted for allegedly shooting a locked gate and stealing his own impounded car is in the hospital tonight after he was shot by police during a foot pursuit.

Kevin Ballew, 36, was thought to be in critical condition by an American Fork Police Department earlier this evening, though further information on his injuries was not available.

UPDATE: American Fork suspect expected to survive after police shooting

AFPD Lt. Kevin Doyl told ABC4 News how investigators had been working “all day” to locate Ballew after he allegedly fired 21 shots from a 9mm pistol into a lock to break into a towing company’s car impound lot and steal a Honda Civic on Tuesday. Ballew allegedly used the car to ram his way out of the impound lot.

Doyl said officers tracked the vehicle to a local apartment complex on W. Carlisle Park Ln. in South Salt Lake and reportedly found Ballew in the vehicle. When officers attempted to make contact with Ballew, he got out of the car and fled on foot. While Doyl did not elaborate on exactly what happened to cause officers to fire on Ballew, he confirmed police wounded him with gunshots. Ballew was taken to a local hospital.

No officers were injured in the shooting, said Doyl.

Police said they may have additional information for release on Thursday morning.
