Exclusive: Suspect named in 2018 San Marcos apartment complex fire that killed 5

An arrest has been made in the 2018 San Marcos apartment fire that killed five people and injured dozens more, city officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

Hays County Jail records show 30-year-old Jacobe Ferguson was booked into the facility Wednesday on a charge of arson causing serious bodily injury or death, a first degree-felony for which he faces life in prison.

The charge listed the offense date as July 20, 2018 - the same date as the fire.

A press conference is planned for Thursday at 10 a.m.

The fire broke out the morning of July 20, 2018 at Iconic Village and Vintage Pads apartments, a popular residence for Texas State University students. The bodies of Haley Michele Frizzell, 19, David Ortiz, 21, Dru Estes, 20, James Miranda, 23, and Belinda Moats, 21, were found among the debris.

Residents were jumping out of the first and second-story windows at the complex during the fire, and many reported faulty smoke alarms that did not go off.

The federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined four months after the fire that it was set intentionally.

The fire is the deadliest in the city's history.
