TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Police Department (TPD) announced the arrest of a man in connection with a double homicide investigation near Nebraska Ave.

TPD said officers arrested 37-year-old Whitney Newsome, saying Newsome got into an argument with the female victim before the shooting.

During the argument, the male victim stepped in to intervene, which is when the dispute escalated, according to police.

Police say Newsome pulled out a handgun and shot the female victim, who attempted to run before collapsing in front of a convenience store in the area of E. 26th Ave.

Newsome allegedly shot at the man and a third female victim as they tried to flee, striking the man but missing the third victim. Investigators say Newsome then ran from the scene.

Newsome and the victims all knew each other, according to investigators.

Officers said a handgun was located in the area that Newsome fled during the investigation. Witness statements led detectives to Newsome, who was located and arrested in the area of E. 25th Ave and N. 33rd St. early Saturday morning.

“I am incredibly proud of the dedication and efficiency demonstrated by our detectives and officers throughout this investigation,” said Chief Bercaw. “Their tireless work, combined with the tips and assistance provided by the community, allowed us to quickly remove a dangerous felon from the streets and bring a sense of closure to the families of the victims.”

Newsome is facing two counts of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and a felon in possession of a firearm. He was taken to the Orient Road Jail.
