Suspect arrested after two-county chase

May 22—A Mesquite resident who was apparently concerned about not having automobile insurance was taken into custody after a chase across Rockwall County and into Dallas County early Tuesday morning.

The Rockwall County Sheriff's Office reported that a deputy was working on Interstate 30 in Royse City at around 2 a.m. Tuesday when he attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle. The vehicle's driver allegedly accelerated, passed vehicles on the shoulder, and continued evading police all the way to Mesquite.

A Department of Public Safety aircraft unit provided assistance and the fleeing vehicle finally struck a retaining wall on the interstate in Mesquite, which disabled the vehicle. The suspect, Malik Fredrick Moore, was arrested on suspicion of evading detention with a vehicle. The Mesquite Police Department investigated the accident scene.

The report from the Rockwall Sheriff's Office indicated that Moore had previously evaded two other law enforcement agencies Monday evening. When asked why he ran, Moore allegedly told police that he was afraid his uninsured vehicle would be impounded, according to the Rockwall County Sheriff's Office.

Moore was booked into the Rockwall County Detention Center where he was being held in lieu of $50,000 bond on a charge of evading arrest/detention with a motor vehicle.
