Suspect in attempted rape and kidnapping in Taunton cemetery held without bail

TAUNTON — A 21-year-old Taunton man was ordered held without bail after being arraigned on kidnapping and attempted rape charges related to an alleged incident at Mayflower Hill Cemetery on Saturday, WCVB is reporting.

William Perez was ordered ordered held without bail Monday in Taunton District Court pending a dangerousness hearing on Thursday.

Perez was also charged with indecent assault and battery on a person age 14 or over, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon.

According to Police Chief Edward Walsh, officers were dispatched to Mayflower Hill Cemetery on Broadway at 2:41 p.m. after they received “multiple reports of a possible rape,” Police Chief Edward Walsh said in a written statement.

“During the initial investigation, Taunton Police learned that an assailant had attacked a woman in the cemetery, forced her to leave cemetery property with him, and then fled on foot,” stated a police summary.

“Officers set up staging and performed a comprehensive search of the area around the cemetery, assisted by the Raynham Police Department and the Raynham K-9 Unit.”

According to Taunton Police, the victim was transported by Brewster Ambulance to an area hospital to treat her injuries and was released.

Police said Perez was arrested at his home on Sunday.

“Chief Walsh wishes to recognize the detectives of the Investigative Services Division for their professionalism and hard work on this case and thanks the Raynham Police Department for its assistance,” the written statement said.
