Suspect charged in 2 sex assaults, 3 attempted kidnappings, CMPD says

A suspect has been charged in two sex assaults and three attempted kidnappings reported across Mecklenburg County, police said Monday.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said 31-year-old Kelvin Rene Mejia Ortiz was arrested Saturday and taken to jail.

Ortiz is charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual battery, attempted kidnapping, assault on a female and communicating threats. Police said the charges were brought in connection to cases the span several CMPD divisions, as well as a case in Huntersville.

Investigators said all of the victims who have been identified at this point are Hispanic women. They said Ortiz spoke both English and Spanish to his alleged victims.

According the police reports, the five women did not know the suspect.

One woman said she is relieved Ortiz has been arrested, but worries for the safety of all women.

“It is scary not only as a woman, but as a young woman who just came here to buy stamps,” Montgomery Lee Bruce said.

On Monday, Bruce was running errands near where an 18-year-old was kidnapped from Archdale Drive, taken 2 miles away, and sexually assaulted at gunpoint, according to police. It’s one of the cases Ortiz is accused in.

“It’s not something we should be having to think about, it’s not something we should be prepared for,” Bruce said. “It’s a scary world we live in.”

Detectives believe the very first incident also happened on Archdale Drive on Aug. 29. In that incident, police said another woman in her 20s was kidnapped and assaulted by Ortiz.

Police said there were three other women assaulted between the first and last attack. Some claimed they were either followed, kidnapped, or assaulted.

CMPD officers found the suspect’s vehicle and took Ortiz into custody Saturday night.

Police said they are still investigating. They said anyone who thinks they might be a victim of Ortiz, or anyone who has any information about the cases, to call police with what they know.
