Suspect charged with murder of man hit by ‘stray bullet’ in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A suspect has been charged for the murder of a man who was shot and killed by a stray bullet that went through the front door of an apartment during a shooting in Kalamazoo.

Jamyre Cameron Thompson was charged Wednesday with four counts of assault with intent to murder, six counts of felony firearm and a count of resisting and obstructing, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. He had already been in custody on unrelated charges, police say. He was denied bond.

The charges stem from April 9, when police were called to Interfaith Homes near the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Prouty Street around 10:30 p.m. Arriving officers found 53-year-old Mark Jackson of New Baltimore unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Jackson, who did not live at the apartment but was visiting family, was hit by a “random stray bullet” that went through the front door, KDPS Capt. Rafael Diaz told News 8 at the time. Outside, officers found crashed cars that had bullet holes, shell casings and a small crowd of uncooperative onlookers.

Investigators said a suspect fired “multiple” shots at a vehicle and then ran away. No one inside the car was injured.

“The activity that occurred in the parking lot … was between an individual and the occupants of that vehicle,” Diaz said. “The bullet that killed our victim was a random stray bullet.”
