A suspect in the shooting death of a local Oak Park jeweler has been charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm, according to police.

Ray Donta Larry, 44, of Detroit, has been charged in connection with the shooting death of Daniel Hutchinson, a local jeweler with an extensive list of celebrity clients, and the owner of the store that sold the Cartier sunglasses, known as "Buffs," that were gifted to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Larry was arraigned Friday  in 45th District Court, according to authorities.

The suspect was denied bond, authorities said.

On Wednesday, 47-year-old Hutchinson was shot multiple times after leaving one of his businesses, police said. Officers on the scene performed CPR on the victim before he was taken to a local hospital where he died. The suspect, police said, fled the scene after the incident, but was apprehended shortly after.

Nearby neighbors said they could hear the gunshots as the incident was taking place.

Hutchinson was the owner of Hutch's Jewelry in Oak Park, which has been known since the '90s for selling high-end pieces, from chains to watches and glasses. Its client list includes many celebrity entertainers, such as rapper Rick Ross,  Sada Baby, Jacquees, boxer Adrien Broner and many other local entertainers.

In 2020, the family-owned jewelry store sold a pair of Cartier C Décor marbled white buffalo horn sunglasses, affectionately known to Detroiters as Buffs, to Detroit rapper GMac Cash, self-proclaimed "king of parody rap." He, in turn, gifted them to Whitmer.

Hutchinson's longtime friend and rapper Arkeisha Knight, better known as Kashdoll, said anytime a person loses their life it is just "awful."

"I feel like when anybody's life is taken, it's just awful,” Knight said. “This is just awful."

A motive for the shooting is still under investigation and Oak Park police ask anyone with information to call 248-691-7511 or 248-691-7513.
