DEMING – Deming Police have provided more details on the daring daytime shooting that took place Monday at the Deming Manor Apartments.

John Umlauf, 31, of Deming, is facing multiple charges in the shooting of a 26-year-old male who was on life support in an El Paso hospital Tuesday morning.

According to a Deming police, officers were dispatched to 1000 South Zinc Street about a shooting at the Deming Manor. When officers arrived, they found a male subject suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.

Deming Fire Department EMTs were called to the scene and transported the subject to Mimbres Memorial Hospital. According to law enforcement at the scene, the subject was later transported to an El Paso area hospital.

The identity of the victim has not been released to the Deming Headlight pending notification of his family. The victim was shot once in the head and appears to have been shot twice in the right arm.

Yellow crime scene tape was stretched across the entrance to the south parking lot of the Deming Manor Apartments as Deming police investigators combed the grounds and canvassed the complex.

Deming High School was put into "Shelter in Place" status while law enforcement secured a perimeter around a section of the complex. The complex is a block away from the school and students were involved in several activities at the school, including Mariachi classes, basketball practice and summer school classes.

Deming Police investigators were seen placing numbered yellow placards on the ground of the complex and on the side of South Zinc St. The placards were tracing tire impressions, according to Deming police.

Two investigators carried manila envelopes as they collected evidence while a third investigator snapped photos with a camera.

Investigators gathered enough information at the scene to identify Umlauf as a suspect. He was located shortly after the shooting by a Luna County Sheriff’s Office Deputy. Deming police responded to the Deming Walmart parking lot where both agencies performed a felony stop of Umlauf’s vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident.

Umlauf invoked his Fifth Amendment right while in custody. He is charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery, Assault with Intent to Commit a Violent Felony, Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle and Aggravated Assault.

The weapon used appears to have been a .45 caliber handgun.

“This case is still under investigation,” said Deming Police Chief Clint Hogan. The victim is a resident of the Deming Manor Apartments.

This is an open Deming police case and anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Detective J. Fetrow at 575-546-3012.
