Suspect in custody following vegetation fire at Rancho Cordova homeless encampment

A person is in custody on suspicion of arson following a Monday morning fire in Rancho Cordova.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said crews were dispatched around 9:45 a.m. to a vegetation fire at a homeless encampment on Zinfandel Drive and Douglas Road.

Firefighters on scene “quickly extinguished” the fire, according to a Monday social media post from The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

The fire charred about half an acre before it was extinguished, but no injuries were reported.

The fire was investigated and found to be human-caused, according to the post. A suspect was identified and has been taken into custody.
