A man carrying a rifle, claiming to have a gun was shot and killed by police.
- Last night at approximately 10:30 PM, a 911 call was received by the Worcester emergency communications department from a man claiming that he had a bomb, an explosive device, a rifle, and that he was threatening to detonate the device. Negotiations were immediately started with the communications department, as Worcester the police and Worcester police negotiators responded to the scene. Also responding to the scene was the Worcester Police Department SWAT team.
They observed the man, who appeared to have a rifle, he had body armor, and a backpack. Negotiations continued, both over the phone with the emergency department and with four negotiators at the scene. We were in very close proximity to the man. There was a lengthy attempt to de-escalate the situation, at which point the man advanced towards the police officers. At that point, there was a shooting, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services.
We're in the very early stages of this investigation. The Worcester police department, the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad, in conjunction with the district attorney's office, are currently investigating the scene. We expect this to go on throughout the morning. Again, we're very early into the scene. We also do not have any identification of the man at this point. I'd like to turn it over to Lieutenant Sean Murtha with the Worcester police department.
SEAN MURTHA: Good morning. As the district attorney said, it is early right now. So we're going to have a press conference at 11 o'clock. At that point, we should be able to give you a bit more information, answer some questions. We also ask for anyone who was present at the scene who has video of it to come forward, and please call us at 508-799-8651. Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
