Suspect in fatal shooting of Bloomfield father expected to face CT judge following extradition from Arizona

The suspect in a homicide in Bloomfield is expected to face a judge on Friday on murder and weapons charges after being extradited back to Connecticut.

Devante Swaby, 29, of Peoria, Arizona, will face charges of murder, criminal use of a weapon, carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of an assault weapon and weapons in a motor vehicle in connection with the Dec. 4 fatal shooting of 31-year-old Timothy Ross, the Bloomfield Police Department said Thursday.

Swaby has been held as a fugitive from justice since he was apprehended in Arizona on Dec. 15 by the U.S. Marshals Connecticut Violent Fugitive Task Force, according to police. His capture came days after Bloomfield investigators secured a warrant charging him in the death of the Bloomfield father of two.

Police found Ross suffering from gunshot wounds shortly before 9 a.m. in the area of 590 Bloomfield Ave. where officers responded to the report of a shooting. He was taken in an ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

According to police, Swaby fled Connecticut following the killing to his home state.

Swaby was expected to be held on a $5 million bond once he was extradited back to Connecticut pending an arraignment hearing in Hartford Superior Court on Friday, police said.

According to Mothers United Against Violence co-founder Rev. Henry Brown, Ross left behind two daughters, a brother and a mother.

“Timothy was 31 years old. Two kids. Christmas is right around the corner and their daddy won’t be there,” Brown said during a vigil last month. “So many people’s lives have been destroyed this year with gun violence. Timothy’s family’s life was destroyed this year with gun violence.”

Information from Courant reporter Taylor Hartz was used in the report.
