A Hamilton man charged in connection to a fatal shooting at a Fairfield Township Walmart has now been declared competent to stand trial, according to documents filed Wednesday in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Following a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation, it was determined Anthony Freeman Brown, 32, would be able to stand trial after one person was killed and another was injured May 26 at the Walmart on Princeton Road.

Prosecutors say it happened while Brown was attempting to rob the store.

Brown entered pleas of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity in June. He is charged with aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery, felonious assault and having weapons under disability.

Brown is accused of fatally shooting Adam Lee Black, 35, during a robbery attempt at the Walmart. The Fairfield Township police incident report says Black was shopping at the store around 8 p.m. when Brown fired gunshots.

Black attempted to stop Brown from stealing items from the store, police say. An employee at the Walmart was also shot in the incident, but survived.

Brown was held at jail without bond during the psychiatric evaluation. Bond was initially reduced from $5 million to $900,000, and is now set at $5 million again.

Clyde Bennett, Brown's attorney, could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
