Suspect’s gun falls, fires at Chicago police during East Chatham pursuit

A gun discharged and fired near Chicago police officers after it fell from a man they were chasing Wednesday afternoon on the South Side.

No one was shot during the incident, which happened about 2:45 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Maryland Avenue in the city’s East Chatham neighborhood.

Officers spotted a man with a gun and when they encountered him on a sidewalk, the man turned and ran away.

The officers ran after him and when he dropped it while fleeing, it hit the ground and fired. Nobody was shot and the man was taken into custody, police said.

No charges have been announced.

Area Two detectives are investigating.
