Cameron Anthony James was arraigned in Calhoun County District Court on Friday, facing open murder and weapons charges in connection with the shooting death of 17-year-old Christopher Williams.

According to police, there were ongoing conflicts and arguments on social media between James, 19, and Williams, culminating in a challenge to meet in person on July 11.

Williams was found shot in the area of Arbor Pointe Townhomes — off Jackson Street West, near North 20th Street. He was taken to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and later died, police said.

Williams was a key member of the Battle Creek Central football team, graduating from the high school in June. He had planned to attend Kalamazoo Community College.

On July 20, Battle Creek Central football players and cheerleaders hosted a car wash, raising more than $5,000 toward funeral expenses for Williams' family.

James had been in jail since last week after being arrested on an unrelated charge of aggrivated assault. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 9.
