Suspect knocked on Meck courthouse worker’s office door, hit her then fled, sheriff says

A search is underway for a 24-year-old man who is suspected of assaulting a worker on the eighth floor of the Mecklenburg-County courthouse Tuesday afternoon, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Around 12:18 p.m., Devonte Johnson knocked on the door of the worker’s Area Mental Health office, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. The woman opened the door and recognized Johnson, who then hit her in the head, the release said. Johnson then ran out of the office and the courthouse, officials said. Deputies immediately secured the building and began a search for Johnson.

The woman was treated by Medic for bruising and swelling to her face, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Warrants were issued against Johnson for assault on a female and aggravated assaulted for the suspect.

Johnson was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt with an orange Adidas logo, gray pants, and a black backpack. Johnson is a registered sex offender, the Sheriff’s Office said, and he was not scheduled for an appointment at the courthouse at the time of the incident.
