Suspect in Peoria hit-and-run accident that killed bicyclist turns himself in to police
PEORIA — John L. Timothy Jr., 39, was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed 28-year-old Akeem Alexander on Monday morning.
Timothy Jr. turned himself in to the Peoria Police Department at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday and was subsequently arrested and taken to the Peoria County Jail.
Timothy Jr. is charged with disregarding a traffic control device; failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident; no insurance; leaving the scene of a death; failure to give aid or information; failure to notify police; reckless driving; and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Alexander was found dead in the intersection of Howett Street and Western Avenue at 3:35 a.m. Monday after being hit while riding his bicycle.
An autopsy showed Alexander suffered multiple blunt-force trauma injuries and died instantly, Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said.
