Suspect quickly arrested after Chase bank robbery in Northeast El Paso

A 53-year-old man was arrested at a motel Tuesday afternoon shortly after allegedly robbing a bank in Northeast El Paso, FBI officials said Wednesday.

Michael Lee Hornback, who the FBI described as a transient, was booked on a federal bank robbery charge after he allegedly robbed the Chase Bank at 5209 Wren Ave. near Dyer Street in the Northgate area.

An off-duty El Paso police officer who was alerted to the robbery reported a man matching Hornback's description and quickly notified patrol officers, the FBI said in a news release.

Patrol officers quickly took Hornback into custody without incident at a nearby motel on Dyer Street, the FBI stated, praising the officers for their "swift action." The FBI also thanked residents and businesses for providing information that helped identify and locate Hornback.

The amount of money stolen was not disclosed.

Hornback was charged with bank robbery following an investigation by FBI agents and detectives with the police Crimes Against Persons Unit. If convicted of bank robbery, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

An El Paso County Jail log lists Hornback as being from Taylorsville, Utah, in the Salt Lake City metro area. He is jailed in Downtown without bond.
