Suspect Fatally Shot by Police After Firing Weapon Near Manhattan Cathedral Concert

A suspect was shot by police after opening fire at an outdoor concert at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan on Sunday afternoon, December 13, according to the cathedral and officials.

The NYPD said on Sunday evening that “shots rang out” near the end of a caroling concert and that an on-site officer engaged with an armed suspect “almost immediately.”

The NYPD confirmed officers fired at least 15 shots, with at least one striking the suspect in the head and killing him. An unconfirmed number of rounds were fired from either side. Officers said that no bystanders were injured by the crossfire.

“From the preliminary body camera … you see three officers acting heroically,” Commissioner Shea said in front of the cathedral on Sunday evening.

A bag believed to belong to the suspect was recovered, containing a full can of gasoline, rope, wire, multiple knives, a Bible, and tape.

Shea said NYPD had a “tentative identification” of the suspect but were not publicly naming anyone yet. Credit: Lauri Neff via Storyful
