A suspect in the robbery of a Worcester sneaker store was apprehended in Southborough early Friday after he ditched his car on the Massachusetts Turnpike and took refuge in a tree, according to state police.

Troopers in a state police helicopter used an infrared camera to locate the man. He was about 25 feet off the ground, in a tree in the yard of a house on Cordaville Road, not far from the highway.

Troopers and Southborough police officers, aided by a tracking dog, were directed to the yard by troopers in the air. The suspect climbed from the tree and gave himself up, state police said.

The arrest, about 4:30 a.m. Friday, followed a break-in two hours earlier at the Shoe Supply Store, 1114 Pleasant St., Worcester.

Worcester officers observed a 2010 Mercedes-Benz sedan speeding from the scene. A pursuit followed, with state police taking over as the suspect's vehicle moved onto Route 146 and then the Massachusetts Turnpike east.

After several miles, as the getaway car entered Southborough, troopers ahead place tire-deflation sticks on the highway. The suspect's car crashed soon after hitting the sticks. He jumped from the vehicle and bolted into woods along the highway.

An extensive search followed, ending with the suspect being located in the tree by the air wing crew of Sgt. Gregg Spooner, Trooper Joshua Pacheco and Trooper Mason Oliveira.

State police did not immediately release the identification of the suspect. He faces breaking and entering, and motor vehicle charges, authorities said.
