Suspected shooter calls 911 after man shot and killed at makeshift gun range

A man was shot multiple times and died at a makeshift gun range at or near his home just east of Lake Norman, authorities said Tuesday.

His suspected shooter called 911 to report the death, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said.

Medical responders pronounced David Shane Nance dead at the scene in the 200 block of Nance Farm Road near Mooresville, Campbell said in a news release.

Nance, 46, lived at 191 Nance Farm Road, according to public records.

Herbert Mark Potts, a 63-year-old Mooresville resident, made the emergency call on the day of the shooting, Nov. 18, Campbell said.

In his 911 call, Potts said he shot Nance and later told investigators he fired the shots after an altercation between the pair, according to the news release.

Sheriff’s investigators aren’t saying if they know what prompted the altercation.

Nance died of two gunshot wounds to his chest, Campbell said an autopsy conducted on Monday showed.

Potts was arrested at his home Monday on a charge of felony first-degree murder, the sheriff said. He remained jailed Tuesday without bond pending a first court appearance.
