Suspected snowboard thieves at Boreal Mountain arrested in Nevada County

(FOX40.COM) — Three men suspected of stealing snowboards were arrested on Monday after attempting to steal another snowboard at a ski resort, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said the three men are each charged with grand theft and criminal conspiracy with two of them incurring additional charges. Two of the men arrested are a 25 and 23-year-old from Grass Valley and the other is a 38-year-old from Nevada City.

Officials said two snowboarders at Boreal Mountain Ski Resort placed their snowboards in the ski/snowboard rack holders outside the ski resort’s ticket area for around 15 minutes. When the snowboarders returned, one of their snowboards was missing and they began searching for it in the area.

During their search, the snowboarders reportedly located the missing snowboard in the bed of a truck in the resort’s parking lot where they later encountered the three suspects, officials said.

When they encountered the suspects, the sheriff’s office said the 25-year-old suspect allegedly assaulted one of the snowboarders before he fled the area with the other two men.

Officials said the snowboarders successfully recovered the snowboard and called 911 to report the fleeing vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, the victims were able to provide deputies with a detailed description of the suspects and vehicle with the license plate number. Officials determined the vehicle was registered to the 23-year-old man.

The sheriff’s office said both the 25-year-old and 38-year-old are on active probation with grant terms and conditions, including search and seizure. Authorities arrested all three suspects at one of their homes in Grass Valley.

Along with Nevada County Probation, the sheriff’s office said it recovered four suspected stolen snowboards and drug paraphernalia at the residence.

All three men were arrested and booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.

During an investigation, the sheriff’s office said there were two additional snowboard theft victims on Monday. Those snowboards were recovered in the parking lot, adjacent to where the suspected vehicle had parked, the sheriff’s office said.

As ski season continues, the sheriff’s office urges skiers and snowboarders to never leave their equipment or belongings unattended, as equipment theft is an ongoing occurrence.

If equipment must be left, the sheriff’s office recommends using combination locks to safely secure belongings.

Any recent victims of snowboard theft are urged to contact the Nevada County Sheriff’s Property Unit at 530-265-1350 with a detailed description of their snowboard to determine if it’s been recovered.
