A gunman suspected of terrorism motives shot and killed two Swedish soccer fans Monday night on a street in Brussels, Belgium. Belgian police shot and killed the suspect Tuesday.

The incident prompted authorities to shut down a soccer match between Belgium and Sweden, keeping 35,000 fans inside the stadium for hours, The Associated Press reported.

“This person claims to be inspired by Islamic State,” Eric Van Duyse, a spokesperson for Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office, told AP. “The Swedish nationality of the victims was put forward as the probable motive.”

He said investigations indicate there is not evidence that the attack has a connection to the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The 45-year-old Tunisian suspect identified as a member of Islamic State, and he “claimed responsibility in a video posted online,” according to Reuters.

What happened in the shooting that killed 2 Swedish soccer fans?

Videos posted on social media of the murder “showed a man wearing an orange fluorescent vest pulling up on a scooter, taking out a large weapon and opening fire on passersby before chasing them into a building to gun them down,” per CBS News.

The Swedish victims were on their way to the European Championship qualifier when they were killed.

“Last night, three people left for what was supposed to be a wonderful soccer party. Two of them lost their lives in a brutal terrorist attack,” Belgian prime minister Alexander De Croo said at a news conference, per ESPN. “Their lives were cut short in full flight, cut down by extreme brutality.”
