Suspicious package left outside metro Atlanta women’s clinic determined to be bag of baby clothes

Police say a suspicious package was found outside of a metro Atlanta women’s clinic Wednesday morning, prompting road closures in the area.

The package, which police said was a backpack, was found outside of the Beacon of Hope pregnancy and parent organization and the Women’s Clinic of Atlanta.

Johns Creek police immediately shut down roads and called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation out of an abundance of caution.

There have been no prior threats to the clinic.

A GBI bomb squad deployed a bomb-sniffing robot, which later determined the backpack was full of baby supplies and appeared to have been left behind by its owner.

The Women’s Clinic bills itself as providing birth control, ultrasounds and abortion counseling, but does not perform abortion procedures. The Beacon of Light says its goal is to provide resources for struggling moms and parents.

The clinic is listed on a database of “crisis pregnancy centers,” which aim to prevent women from having abortions. The Crisis Pregnancy Center Map is a database run by two professors at the University of Georgia.

The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a 50-year-old ruling that protected women’s constitutional right to an abortion last week.

Abortion is still legal in Georgia up to 20 weeks, though Georgia Gov. Kemp has signed the Georgia Heartbeat Law, which would outlaw abortion at 6 weeks pending a decision by the 11th Circuit.
