‘Sustainable September’ events to highlight Bexley’s green initiatives

To encourage residents to participate in recycling, renewable energy and other eco-friendly initiatives, the city of Bexley will hold a series of events under the banner “Sustainable September.”

The city will provide information about “green” programs at the annual Labor Day Block Party, which is scheduled for 3:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 4 along East Main Street, said Elizabeth Ellman, the city’s sustainability programs coordinator.

Vendors are to include Rumpke Waste & Recycling and Bring the Farm To You, which offers educational programs about agriculture and animals.

“We’ll be promoting these events there, as well,” Ellman said, referring to Sustainable September programs that will be highlighted during the Labor Day Block Party.

Another event is “Learn About Solar Co-Ops,” an information session scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Bexley Public Library, 2411 E. Main St. Representatives from Solar United Neighbors of Ohio will provide an overview of the Columbus Area Solar Co-Op, which includes Bexley. The city of Columbus announced the co-op in July.

The initiative aims to bring Franklin County and surrounding area homeowners together into a group, according to the organization’s website, solarunitedneighbors.org.

The library partnered with the city of Bexley to present “Learn About Solar Co-Ops,” said Paige Sifford Bilotta, the library’s director of advancement and community relations.

“Our community has always been forward-thinking in terms of being environmentally friendly, so this program presents a great opportunity for us to learn about utilizing solar energy at home and how solar co-ops work,” Bilotta said. “Solar United Neighbors will be here to discuss the technology, affordability and practicality, as well as answer all of the great questions I’m sure our community members will pose.”
