Actress Suzanne Somers dies day before 77th birthday

Iconic actress Suzanne Somers has died of cancer just one day shy of her 77^th birthday, her publicist confirmed to Page Six.

Somers, known for her roles in the sitcoms “Three’s Company” and “Step by Step,” had been battling breast cancer for over 23 years. She was diagnosed a second time in July following her first diagnosis in 2000, according to People Magazine.

Her publicist released the following statement:

“Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 15. She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years. Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce and her immediate family. Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16; instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly. A private family burial will take place this week, with a memorial to follow next month.”

People reported on Somers’ 77^th birthday plans on Sunday morning, saying that she was planning on spending the day with her “nearest and dearest” family, including her six grandchildren.

Fellow entertainers took to social media to express their condolences, including “Bewitched” actress Erin Murphy — who said Somers inspired her to get a Ford Thunderbird due to her appearance in one in the 1973 film “American Graffiti” — and music publicist Eric Alper, who remarked that the actress brought “laughter and joy” into the lives of those around her.

In addition to her successful career as an actress, Somers was also an author, businesswoman and health spokesperson.
