SWA to host its annual-recycling event Aug. 19

Aug. 4—KINGWOOD — The Preston County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) will hold its annual e-recycling event from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 19, at the old Preston Memorial Hospital parking lot.

SWA Director Don Smith said items accepted will include desktop and laptop computers, audio equipment (no wooden speakers), cables and wires, CD or DVD drives, cell phones, circuit boards, disk drives, DVD players, integrated circuits, ink cartridges (not leaking), keyboards, LCD monitors, litho film, computer mice, microwaves (please remove all food waste), network equipment or switches, power supplies, printers /fax /copy machines, RAM or other computer components, rechargeable batteries (not leaking), servers, speakers (no wooden speakers), stereo equipment, telephones, toner cartridges (not leaking), LCD or LED TVs (one per vehicle) UPS battery backup systems, video cameras, video game consoles and wireless devices.

Not accepted are mercury-containing items such as thermostats and level switches, paint, ballasts with PCBs, light bulbs, food waste, toxic waste, liquids, refrigerators and AC units.

He said the SWA will accept CRTs but there will be a $5 charge for each one.

Smith asked board members to look over a litter poster and give feedback at the next meeting. The poster reads, "Only trash ... litters. Please keep Preston County Green."

In other business, Litter Officer Jay Sowers said he has received complaints about people combining their trash rather than pay for trash pickup at each house. Sowers said he contacted Prosecuting Attorney Jay Shay about the problem.

"He (Shay) said to go ahead and charge them, " Sowers said. "There is a law that says I can come to every house in Preston County and ask for a receipt that shows how you disposed of your trash over the past two years."

He said a tire amnesty was held about a month ago and about 6, 000 tires were taken in.

"A lot of people didn't know about it because the Penny Saver doesn't go everywhere in the county, " he said.

The next meeting of the Preston County Solid Waste Authority will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 6.
