SHAWNEE, Kan. — Game day started early for Chiefs fans in the metro this morning.
The D’s Donut Crew in Shawnee gathers around their coffee and donuts almost every day of the week, but this AFC championship game day is special.
Mr. D’s creates Chiefs donuts during the playoffs and always makes some donuts with the Chiefs opponent logo ready to be burned.
Scorching and then smashing these donuts have proven good luck over the years for the home team.
The group is also known for its endzone dancing. On Sunday before the game, they joined us in a little Chief’s “Swag Surfin'” before the big game.
“A lot of us are retired and we come here and it’s a social thing,” said D’s Donut Crewmember Mike Rivera. “We gather here maybe in the morning for an hour or an hour and a half drink our coffee eat our donuts and we’ve gotten to know each other and we support each other.
“It’s a place to socialize and have some laughs and tell a few jokes and solve the world’s problems. It takes about an hour.”
Some of the members of the group have been meeting for nearly 50 years.
Mr. D’s donates half of the proceeds from its Chiefs Donuts Charity. This week it’s going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
