Swannanoa man charged with murder in Henderson overdose death

A Swannanoa man has been charged with a second-degree murder charge in the 2019 overdose death of a Henderson County man, according to the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's Office deputies were called to investigate a reported overdose on Dec. 4, 2019 at a trailer on Bennison Lane. Deputies found Joshua Hawkins, 30, unresponsive.

Hawkins was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted by the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found the cause of death was fentanyl toxicity, a Sheriff's Office news release states.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit conducted an investigation into the death and determined the source of the fentanyl that contributed to Hawkins' death, the release states.

Brandon Keith Morris, 26, of Burgins Chapel Road in Swannanoa was arrested N and charged with second-degree murder by drug distribution.

He is currently being held in the Henderson County Detention Facility without bond.
