Swansea Country Club receives Golf Course of the Year honors

SWANSEA — The New England Golf Course Owners Association has named Swansea Country Club its 2022 Chapter Course of the Year.

The country club was recognized as course of the year based on four key areas: quality of the course, quality of ownership and management, contributions to the local community, and contributions to the game.

The Swansea Country Club has been owned and operated by Larry and Hilda Doyle for the last 30 years.

"The family takes pride in the semi-private facility’s operation, conditions, quality of staff, and ability to provide access to the game of golf no matter what type of golfer comes to play," states a press release from the owners association.

Larry Doyle has been an NCGCOA member since 1990 and served as a Board of Director member. He took up caddying at the age of 9 for a club in Michigan.

Over the year, Larry Doyle moved through the ranks in the golf business, thanks to his mentors at the Singing Hills CC. He purchased the Swansea Country in 1992. Hilda Doyle joined him shortly after, handling the books and serving as controller.

There have been significant upgrades in all areas of operation, including the clubhouse, the course, practice areas, and even the pool. The Doyles invested in their staff by hiring Robb Martin, who has been there for 17 years.

Martin, the golf operation manager, recently accepted an award for the Doyles in being recognized for its accomplishment at the Annual Chapter Meeting held at the Lake of Isles in North Stonington, Conn. The course will be in the running for National Course of the Year, to be announced in January at Orlando, Fla.

The club has shown great generosity to the community in many charitable donations during events at the facility. Ownership has proved they are environmental stewards of the property through their participation in many conservation programs, including the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.

The NCGCOA is an organization made up of golf course owners and operations, who are dedicated to promoting the game of golf as well as improving conditions, and providing a fun and appealing golf experience for the customers.
