No citations for man who barricaded himself in Lakeview home after dogs found shot, one fatally, in self-defense, police say

Chicago police said no citations were issued to a man who barricaded himself in a Lakeview home Tuesday after shooting two dogs, one fatally, in self-defense.

A 45-year-old woman was in an alley in the 1000 block of West Oakdale Avenue around 1:45 p.m. with two dogs who were not on leashes, police said. The man, 53, entered the alley from a nearby residence, and the dogs moved toward him.

As the man moved away from the dogs, they continued to come toward him “in an aggressive manner,” police said. The man, who is a valid concealed carry license/FOID holder, used a firearm in fear of his safety, and both dogs were hit.

The dogs were taken to separate veterinary clinics, and one of the dogs died of its injuries.

Police said no citations were issued. No further details were immediately available Tuesday night.

Chicago police SWAT officers had responded to an armed man barricaded inside a home on the 1000 block of West George Street, a police spokesperson said.

Police had parts of George and Oakdale blocked off earlier Tuesday. Armored police trucks were on the scene, along with numerous first responder vehicles.

Students had been evacuated earlier from nearby Harriet Tubman Elementary School, an on-scene police officer said.

Tom Rainey-Fluegel said he was walking his 9-month-old puppy, Mia, Tuesday when he heard three loud pops. He mistook the gunshots for construction, but decided to go home when he heard commotion at the elementary school.

Amid flashing ambulance lights and helicopters overheard, he took his black-and-white pup out for another walk later. But he felt the need to change directions when strangers got close, he added.

”It definitely has me kind of on edge walking her for the rest of the day,” Rainey-Fluegel said.
