SWCC basketball sweeps Peru St.

Nov. 8—The lady Spartans didn't let the adversity of a small roster stop them from getting the 72-45 win in their opening game Friday against Peru State JV.

Southwestern Community College (1-0) got out to a fast start, holding the Bobcats to only 3 first-quarter points.

"We came out with great energy and were ready to play," head coach Darien Wingate said. "We shot the ball extremely well from the free throw line and did a good job of getting to the line."

SWCC's Jordan Thompson led the match in points with 21 and five rebounds. Teammate Maddie Stewart logged 10 points, 14 rebounds, five steals and was 100% from the free-throw line.

While Peru State rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Spartans 21-10, they were unable to overcome their first half deficit.

"We need to shoot better from 3 and as always make sure we are playing hard, high energy defense for 40 minutes," Wingate said. "I'm looking forward to our next game, Wednesday and capitalizing off our first win."

The Spartans travel to Omaha, Nebraska, Wednesday to face Metropolitan Community College.

While the men's SWCC basketball team won a narrow 70-66 matchup with Peru State JV Friday, head coach Reggie Kindle said the team needs to do a better job taking care of the basketball.

"I think we shot the ball well as a team from 3 tonight," Kindle said. "But our urgency on the road has to better."

The team won their opener at home by more than 40 points against Graceland University JV, while Friday's matchup was close — a tied game at the half.

Spartans Joel Villanueva and Isaiah Peasley both made four 3-pointers and scored 16 and 14 points, respectively.

SWCC turned over the ball 17 times. "We were extremely carless with the ball tonight," Kindle said. "We have to clean it up and value the ball."

The Spartans rematch the Bobcats tonight at 6 p.m. at home. The crowd theme is red, white and blue for Veterans Day.
