Swedish Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets will not be provided to Ukraine in the near future, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in an interview with the Guardian on Aug. 21.

We will do everything we can to support Ukraine, even with aircraft,” Kristersson explained.

“But right now there are no new commitments to provide Swedish aircraft to Ukraine.”

During his visit to Sweden on Aug. 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested Saab JAS 39 Gripens in a direct appeal to Kristersson.

Stockholm said that it will permit Ukrainian pilots to conduct tests on the aircraft, but no definitive arrangements have been made for their transfer.

On June 16, the Swedish government announced that, as part of the 12th aid package to Ukraine, it would undertake the training of pilots to operate Saab JAS 39 Gripens.

On Aug. 19, reports emerged that Ukrainian military personnel are currently undergoing testing for the aircraft.
