Sweet Hereafter announces last call after 13 years

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — It’s almost the last call for a vegan bar in Southeast Portland’s Belmont neighborhood.

On Tuesday, Sweet Hereafter took to Instagram to announce that it will be closing at the end of February. The business has been operating for 13 years, but owners said the last few have been especially challenging.

“We lost one of our founders, navigated Covid and weathered many other challenges,” Sweet Hereafter wrote. “We’re forever indebted to our amazing staff, both past and present. Without them we would not have been able to last as long as we did. We are so extremely grateful to have been part of this community for so long.”

The business opened in 2011 as part of the Lightning Bar Collective, a bar group that includes other neighborhood watering holes such as Bye and Bye on Northeast Alberta Street and Thunderbird on Southeast Foster Road.

Sweet Hereafter became an essential part of Portland’s vegan food community, with a variety of plant-based offerings like tofu banh mi and a mustard-grilled Beyond burger. The spot also became known for its cocktails generously served in 32-ounce Mason jars.

The business had recently promoted its food specials and events on social media. Yet it appears that it faced similar struggles to the other Portland establishments experiencing a January sales slump — which was worsened by the winter storm.

Last month, the Independent Restaurant Alliance of Oregon asked state and city leaders for recovery assistance for the bars and restaurants who lost revenue due to winter weather. On average, IRAO estimated that businesses lost $23,000.

City Commissioner Carmen Rubio announced that she was partnering with other officials to obtain emergency relief funding for Portland’s small businesses.

Sweet Hereafter will still be closing on Thursday, Feb. 29. The bar asked customers to stop by and celebrate its 13 years in the city.
