Netflix romantic drama Sweet Magnolias will be back for a third season.

Variety confirmed that the three leads JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley are all set to reprise their roles, which fans will be delighted about.

The show is based on a series of novels by author Sherryl Woods, and tells the story of three childhood best friends – lawyer Helen, chef Dana Sue and Maddie – who team up to fulfill their dream of opening a spa in their hometown of Serenity, South Carolina.

Executive producer Dan Paulson said in a statement: "We're thrilled to be embarking on our third season for Netflix, and we're looking forward to returning to Serenity."

The cast has been posting on social media to confirm the news, and everyone is happy about returning to the show, with Swisher posting the news on her Instagram, as well as Elliot, who captioned the post saying she's "so excited", and Headley also confirming the return on Instagram.

Plenty of drama happened in the season two finale, and prior to knowing about a potential third season, storylines were being set up, most specifically with a new character who showed up and looks like she's going to be pretty hard work for the ladies.

"I will just say she has a past in common with our ladies and some other folks in town," showrunner Sheryl J Anderson previously told TVLine of this mysterious figure.

"She's been away for a while, but she has come back with an agenda. She has come home to settle some scores."

Dana Sue Sullivan actress Brooke Elliott went on to reveal: "I immediately went to Sheryl and was like, 'Who is this person?!'

"I was alarmed and excited. Hopefully, we'll be given a third season and we can figure out who she is. I'm just as curious as everybody else."
