Once you take a (virtual) trip to Serenity, you'll never want to go anywhere else. Sweet Magnolias, which debuted on Netflix last May, quickly won over millions, all in part due to its feel-good vibes, all-too-relatable storylines and small town charm. Weeks after the dramatic cliffhanger, Netflix confirmed that show will return for season 2. But what can we expect when we revisit Serenity? Keep reading to find out everything we know about Sweet Magnolias season 2, including its highly-anticipated release date, casting news and more.
When is the Sweet Magnolias season 2 release date?
Exciting news: Sweet Magnolias will be back before we know it! The show's main trio — JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Heather Headley and Brooke Elliot — shared a video on their respective Instagram accounts, revealing that the show will return for season 2 on Friday, February 4.
What will the second season be about?
The season 2 trailer gives us a glimpse of what's to come: heartbreak, romance, teenage drama and plenty of margarita nights.
At the very start of the season, we'll learn more about Kyle's condition and who was in the car with him. But of course, more answers only lead to more questions. Netflix released an official statement, revealing the state of Serenity in the upcoming season: "That's just the first of many surprises that come out of Prom Night — surprises that reshape relationships all over town. Friendships flounder. Old loves end and new loves begin. Long-hidden secrets disrupt jobs, change lives and shift the balance of power in Serenity."
Perhaps, Maddie and Cal are one of the couples in question. In an interview with AfterBuzzTV, JoAnna revealed that she hopes Maddie stirs up some drama with her neew beau. "For Maddie, I want her to have that moment that she’s blown up something really great with Cal. I’d like to see that journey and that honest moment for her to figure it out and to kind of let the dust settle a little bit."
This may be a reality, especially since showrunner Sheryl Anderson revealed that she takes JoAnna, Brooke and Heather's wishes to heart. "I take [all three women's suggestions seriously] because I really respect the work they've done, and they have a fabulous insight into their characters. I think there's a good chance some of the things they were excited about exploring, they'll be able to explore," she told Glamour.
Either way, the show's writers have plenty of material to work with. The Netflix series is based off Sherryl Woods' books by the same name, and the author claims that the first season pulls from the first three books in the 11-book series. That means, there are eight more books for the writers to pull from — at least a couple more seasons then, right?
What has the cast said about season 2?
Shortly after Sweet Magnolias resumed filming season 2, JoAnna spoke about what's on deck — but continued to keep things pretty vague. "Last year, you really got to know the characters and laid out the stories and we really dug into the meat and the potatoes of the three [women], where we are in our lives. Well, this year it's like, 'Honey, we're juggling. All of us are juggling.' There's a few more storylines happening to each of us," she told ET.
When asked about how the show will address Kyle's car crash, she stayed coy about the specifics, but pointed out that this moment is turning point in Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue's friendship. "I think you see the depths of the realness of our friendship and the history and that we are all raising our children side by side, but we all are on our own journeys just naturally as life. You will see all of that," she continued. Everything — the trio's connection, life in Serenity, the season 2 storyline — is "super human and super special and super real," according to JoAnna.
Heather later told Glamour that the women's friendship may not be as rock solid as we were led to believe. "I wouldn’t be surprised if something shakes the friendship a little bit, because something always does. A man? Money? I want to know what shakes their foundation a little bit, because how they come back together will be a beautiful thing."
Dion Johnstone, who plays Erik, followed suit in an Instagram post, reassuring fans that season 2 is "gonna dive deep."
Will the entire Sweet Magnolias cast return for season 2?
All of your favorites are set to reprise to their roles: JoAnna (Maddie Townsend), Brooke (Dana Sue Sullivan), Heather (Helen Decatur), Chris Klein (Bill Townsend), Justin Breuning (Cal Maddox), Carson Rowland (Tyler Townsend), Logan Allen (Kyle Townsend), Anneliese Judge (Annie Sullivan) and Chris Medlin (Isaac Downey).
A few members of the cast have been bumped to series regulars for season 2, including Dion (Erik), Jamie Lynn Spears (Noreen Fitzgerald) and Brandon Quinn (Dana Sue's estranged husband). As of right now, it looks like they aren't bringing anyone new to Serenity — but that could always change.
