Sweetgreen salad chain opening in Montclair at end of March
Excitement is building in downtown Montclair for the opening of Sweetgreen, the national chain of salad restaurants, in the historic Crane building.
When will Sweetgreen open?
A sign outside reads, “Almost ready for you, Montclair!” The estimated opening date, according to a worker there, is the last week of March.
What does Sweetgreen offer?
The double-wide store front yields a cavernous interior that hints at the equally vast number of healthy ingredients in creative combinations that will be available for build-your-own or signature salads and warm bowls. The Super Green Goddess, for example, comes with black lentils, chickpeas, roasted sweet potatoes, carrots, spicy broccoli, shredded cabbage, raw beets, roasted almonds, baby spinach, shredded kale and green goddess dressing. The warm Shroomami Bowl combines roasted sesame tofu, portobello mushrooms, raw beets, cucumbers, basil, sunflower seeds, wild rice, shredded kale and miso sesame ginger dressing. Toppings include parmesan crisps, za’atar breadcrumbs and crispy rice.

Ingredients vary seasonally and regionally, since Sweetgreen sources produce from local farmers when possible. Rutabaga and sunchokes are currently on some area menus, for example.
What's the backstory?
Founded by three Georgetown University students in 2006, Sweetgreen is tech-forward, with an app for placing orders and, in some locations, its own delivery service. Known for the long lines that snaked around its stores in downtown Washington DC, San Francisco and Manhattan pre-pandemic, the company has since been forced to follow the workers to more suburban downtowns. Montclair is its fourth New Jersey location, after Jersey City, Hackensack and Shrewsbury.

Sweetgreen will open at 460 Bloomfield Ave., near Church Street in downtown Montclair.
