Sweetie Pants boutique in Tecumseh aims to be go-to place for gifts, clothing for kids

TECUMSEH — There’s a new boutique in town that promises to be that perfect place to find gifts for baby showers and baptisms as well as attire for special occasions for kids sizes infant to 14.

Michelle Barnhart is owner of the new children's clothing boutique Sweetie Pants in downtown Tecumseh.

Sweetie Pants Children’s Boutique and Gifts is centrally located in downtown Tecumseh. It is something that owner Michelle Barnhart always wanted to do while she was working as a natural light professional photographer.

“When we travel, that’s something that I always look forward to is going into stores — children’s boutiques and stores — to see what’s out there,” Barnhart said. “I have children and I'm always looking for gifts for them and new ideas and stuff. And we needed it in town here, I felt. So why not?”

Barnhart has lived in the area for eight years and has three children. She opened the new boutique during the downtown open houses Nov. 11. So far, the reaction has been very positive.

“I think they (customers) love it. They are glad that it’s here because I carry a lot of children’s items that you can’t get really close. So I think it’s going over very well,” Barnhart said.

Barnhart already has a lot of inventory and she plans on getting more in soon.

“I have baby clothes. I have some bigger kids’ clothes. I’m getting in more. I plan to carry 12-14, both girls and boys. Right now, I have mostly little kids, babies’ items at the moment. I have hair bows for the holidays. I have some dolls. I have blankets. I have Bibles for christenings, Boo-Boo Bunnies,” Barnhart said.

What is a Boo-Boo Bunny?

“A Boo-Boo Bunny is a cute little bunny that you put in the freezer and it has kind of like an ice cube in there, and when your child gets a boo-boo, they can hold onto that little animal as well as helping with the boo-boo with the ice,” Barnhart said.

There will be a lot of discounting of items during the holidays.

“I’m going to start marking anything that’s Christmas-specific down,” Barnhart said. “And I might run specials and I'll post those on my Facebook page.”

All of the Christmas merchandise is out, and the store is decorated for the holidays.

“I have a big tree in the front window with garland and lights and he’s — my tree is a he. It’s very child-friendly. I wanted it to be Santa. My Christmas clothing are all displayed so that I have all the Christmas stuff out right as you come in so people see that,” Barnhart said.

Barnhart carries a lot of special brands. She has been working with wholesalers to bring the brands to town. She has Magnolia Baby, Kissy Kissy, Mudpie, Jelly Cats and Wee Ones hair bows.

Barnhart plans on becoming a Tecumseh staple.

“I expect to provide a service for people who are looking for baby shower gifts, christening gifts, special occasion attire for their children. If there’s a ring bearer or flower girl and they want to get a small trinket for them, I want to be the place where people go to get those items,” Barnhart said. “I think it’s going to just grow and be something people will love coming into.”
