Sweetwater's Harrison, Stephenville's Cameron enjoy big days at Region I-4A track meet

LUBBOCK – A year ago, Harrison Foster finished third in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles at the Region I-4A track and field meet.

The Sweetwater senior still remembers getting in the car, thinking his track season was over.

He ended up getting a wild-card berth for the state meet in the 300 hurdles and finished fifth.

There was no doubt this time when he finished either race that he was going to Austin.

Foster won both hurdling events at the Region I-4A meet Saturday at Lowrey Field.

He won the 110 hurdles in 14.75 seconds to beat Seminole senior Andrew Baneman (14.90). Foster came back later in the day and won the 300 hurdles in 38.0 – more than a second faster than second-place Angel Munoz (39.20) of El Paso Riverside.

“Hard work pays off,” said Foster, who will play receiver at Abilene Christian in the fall. “I started hurdles my seventh-grade year. If you could see some videos they were not as good looking as now. Just hard work. Good people behind me who had my back, every turn, every hurdle.”

Foster went into both events as the No. 1 qualifier and all eyes were on him in the finals. The pressure didn’t bother him.

“I was just thinking when I hear that gunshot everything goes away and I’m focused on the next hurdle,” Foster said.

Now, that next hurdle will be the Class 4A state meet May 12 in Austin.

Toreyena Saddler will be making the trip to state as well.

The Sweetwater sophomore won the girls shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 5¼ inches. Monahans freshman Valerie Hunt was second (37-4¼), and Borger’s Hope Gray was third (36-11¼).

Stephenville's Victoria Cameron celebrates after crossing the finish line first in the 400-meter relay. Reese Weyers, Marin Copeland, Jaylee Matthews and Cameron won the event in 48.59 at the Region I-4A track and field meet Saturday at Lowrey Field in Lubbock. Cameron also won the 100 meters and ran a leg on the second-place 800 relay team.

Cameron, Honeybees create buzz

What a day for Stephenville junior Victoria Cameron and the Honeybees.

She won the 100 meters and ran the anchor leg on the winning 400 relay team with Reese Weyers, Marin Copeland and Jaylee Matthews (48.59).

Oh, and she also ran a leg on the Honeybees' second-place 800 relay team, just minutes after winning the 100.

The effort helped the Stephenville girls finish third in the team standings with 94 points. Canyon won it (122), and Argyle was third (106). Big Spring tied Glen Rose for seventh (20).

Big Spring finished third in the boys’ team competition. Argyle won the boys team title (103), and Decatur was second (62).

The irony in Cameron’s big day is the fact she really doesn’t like track. Her favorite sport is soccer.

“It’s kind of like a love-hate feeling,” Cameron said. “Track is something I do to better myself for a sport that I personally love (soccer).”

Yet, she’s going to state in three events.

“It’s something I’ve just got a God-given talent for,” Cameron said. “It’s also something I personally don’t enjoy very much.”

Well, she says that, but after crossing the finish line in the 100 she let it be known she wasn’t very happy with her effort.

“I’m unhappy with my time because I know I could have done better,” Cameron said. “This sport relates to my soccer career that I’d like to get better at.”

Never mind she won the 100 in 12.26, while Argyle’s Keira Inman was second (12.38).

And she showed plenty of emotion when she crossed the finish line first in the 400 relay (48.59), beating Argyle (48.92).

“We weren’t even actually expecting to win,” Cameron said. “We were expecting to be in second, but we kind of knew it was going to be neck-and-neck. We just kept praying and praying to God. We put our trust in him. We let him lead the way for us, and whatever happened to his plan happens.”

Cameron teamed up with K’Ce Johnson, Copeland and Kennedy Coffee to finish second behind Argyle with a 1:43.30 to Argyle’s 1:42.16 in the 800 relay later in the day.

Snyder's Jay Castillo, left, races Dumas' Oliver Ortiz to the finish line in the 400 meters at the Region I-4A track and field meet Saturday at Lowrey Field in Lubbock. Castillo won the race in 48.65 seconds, followed by Ortiz in 48.92.
